In October 2010 Medshield Medical took over Oxygen and a merger that created the fourth largest medical scheme in South Africa that has more than 250,000 scheme members and beneficiaries. Medshield provide comprehensive medical insurance that is similar in structure to the old Oxygen hospital plan.

All members get access to a large selection of programmes for managing disease. Conditions include HIV, asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.
Seven day a week emergency services that include telephone help lines and online resources that offer guidance.
Core Plus – the Oxygen hospital plan upgrade
Core Plus is an excellent plan that is designed to meet the needs of larger families. Members only need to pay for a single child to join but cover extends to however many children they have. This particular hospital plan is also suitable for younger individuals who enjoy good health but want to be confident that any unforeseen hospital costs are covered should they need to be hospitalised. It also includes cover for 12 maternity consultations and the cost of chronic medication.
Benefits are met when members use hospitals on the Medshield list of network hospitals. Rates of cover include between 100 percent and 200 percent of the procedure costs. GPs and other specialists expenses are met with co-payments, members pay some of the associated fees while the treatment of 26 prescribed minimum benefits, as detailed in legislation is also covered.
Oxygen hospital plan – now Medshield’s Standard Option
A more fully featured service than the Core Plus offering but it too offers cover to all children, no matter how many, for the price of cover for the first one. Benefits include major hospitalisation when access to chronic medication is restricted. It also covers day-to-day medical expenses. As expected, cover is provided in Medshield network hospitals while co-payments operate for GP and other specialist expenses and the expected cover for 26 PMBs is included.
