Additional funding announced for the Healthcare sector
Jill Larkan is the Head of Healthcare Sector Consulting at financial advisory business GTC. Here she responds to Finance Minister Tito Mboweni’s Medium Term Budget Policy Statement presented on Wednesday 24 October 2018.
“The finance minister mentioned that R350 million has been put aside for recruitment of new staff into the healthcare sector. That is excellent news. It will obviously make a huge difference to the level and quality of service which the public will receive through the public healthcare system.
“The additional funding will definitely go a long way towards easing the burden which the NHI was going to feel for not having enough staff in the healthcare sector previously. This R350 million will definitely make a difference.
“In addition, the Finance Minister mentioned that an amount of R150 million has been set aside for beds and linen for hospitals. This is very much in line with what the NHI committee picked up as serious deficiencies in the healthcare sector which needed to be addressed as a matter of urgency. This funding is applauded and shows that the healthcare sector is starting to achieve improvements one small step at a time, which is great.”
